This week we celebrated the 242nd birthday of our nation on July 4th. As we celebrated with fireworks, cookouts and days off work, we were commemorating and celebrating the freedoms that we have as Americans. But there is a greater freedom that we have as children of God. Jesus says in John 8:36, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Jesus, through His sacrifice on the cross and the gift of salvation made possible as we accept Him as our Savior, has made us free from the penalty of sin, which is death. We were once slaves to sin, we were in bondage – whether we realized it or not, liked it our not – but when Jesus set us free as He cleansed us from the sin that held us captive, we received the ultimate freedom. As a result, everyday should be a day of celebration for the freedom we have in Jesus!
We may sing it is great to be an American, where at least I know I am free, but what a greater testimony to be able to share that I am free because Jesus set me free and I know that my future is secure in Him as I serve Him and live life His way.
Today I thank God for my freedom as a citizen of this great nation, but more importantly I thank God for the freedom that I have from sin and death because of the gift of salvation and the promise of everlasting life made possible only through Jesus Christ.
